FOR YOUR BABY'S HEALTH
Your baby will spend approximately 25,000 hours in nappies. They are against their skin, and in close contact with their genitals, for all that time, so it stands to reason that you would do some research to find out exactly what you are putting in such close contact with your baby, for such an intense period of time!
FOR YOUR BABY'S PLANET
Often those in disposables industry will quote the use of pesticides required in raising cotton which is by far the most common material used in washable nappies. Sound a bit strange, as most of us wear clothes that are made of cotton - should we all start wearing disposable clothes? However, if you are concerned, don't use cotton nappies! Try hemp, or organic cotton, or bamboo, or polyester or microfiber - the list goes on.
The other point that tends to get raised is the amount of water that is required to wash the nappies, as well as the use of nappy soaks like Napisan. Research has shown that the water used to wash a load of nappies is equivalent to around the amount that is used in toilet flushing by an average adult in a day. Put that way, it doesn't seem bad, unless all adults be using disposable underwear too. As for the use of napisan or other soakers, these are not necessary, in fact the less often used the better it is for washable nappies. There are more natural ways of sanitizing the nappies (the sun is a free resource, or take advantage of the powerful but humble household items like tea tree oil, vinegar and baking soda.

Ahhh - the ever present dollar. You are going to change your baby's nappy around 6,000 times before they are toilet trained.
YOUR FIRST CHILD. Your cloth nappies will be still going strong for your second and even third babies, with your monetary savings increasing hugely with each baby you use them on
FOR YOUR BABY'S COMFORT
As for comfort do you choose to wear paper/plastic underwear or cotton underwear?
You do not get nappy rash from cloth nappies, you get nappy rash from not having your nappy changed often enough. Only a few short decades ago when all babies wore cloth nappies, nappy rash was almost unheard of. Today, however it is estimated that over 70% of babies will experience nappy rash. So don't try blaming nappy rash on cloth nappies!
How much time have you spent researching equipment for your baby? Nappies are the most used piece of equipment and the closest thing to your baby’s skin. So - they are worth the most research.
